Rest in Peace

Yesterday, my parents put Mali to sleep. The past year or so, she’s been fighting through ongoing kidney problems. This past week, she fell ill once more. We learned that she had also developed heart disease, which combined with her kidney problems, would have been almost impossible to treat. We didn’t want her to suffer any more, so we let her go.

Crafty

The Frugal Girl

Awesome blog. I was looking up tips for repainting old furniture when I came across it. She’s taken some really old, ugly thrift store stuff and turned it into beautiful, expensive-looking pieces.

Tomorrow I’m buying primer and paint, and hope to turn my beat up desk and dresser into something worth keeping. Pictures of my triumph (or failure) to come.

Dexter's New Harness

A few weeks ago I ordered a custom x-back harness from Alpine Outfitters. Yesterday, it finally arrived! He wasn’t too excited about wearing it — he hates harnesses. However, once he’s out and running, he usually forgets it’s on.

He’s already comfortable running alongside my bike with the doggy jogger. Soon, I’ll buy a tow line and attach it to the front, so he can practice pulling.

Unfortunately, it’s been so hot, I haven’t gone near my bike in quite awhile. Even just walking him gets to be too much on some afternoons. Just another reason why I can’t wait for Fall to get here!

Etsy Favorite: Birdnerd

I’ve always adored the artwork of Chelsea Groves. Now I’m super excited to move into a new house, so I can buy some of her adorable prints and decorate empty walls.

Monthly Expenses, The Future, Etc.

For over a year now, I’ve been living with my parents — well, sort of. I’ve been living in the lower half of their duplex-ish house. I say “ish” because it’s not legally a duplex, and we have rooms in our portion that my parents still use. No big deal, my parents are very cool. Plus, they only charge me for my share of utilities, so I’ve been able to save a ton.

Despite all the perks, I’ve been very eager to get my own place. There are a lot of silly reasons (like I want to decorate and buy my own furniture), but also some legitimate ones (like how I want to feel like an adult). After looking for months and months, I think we’ve finally found the perfect place. I don’t want to jinx it, so I won’t write too much about it yet — but it seems the landlady really liked us, so our fingers are crossed.

I do want to write about my current lifestyle, and what will change upon moving out. Like I said, right now my expenses are minimal. I pay my dad $150 to cover the utilities I use, along with $90 for my car insurance and $60 for my cell phone (we’ve got family plans for both, so it’s just easier to pay my share directly to him). After those bills, I spend around $150 on groceries each month, plus about $50-100 in pet supplies (the summer costs more because of Dexter’s flea and ticket preventatives). I usually spend around $60 on gas each month, and I’m not sure if this will go up or down once I move. I’ll be working from home, but I’ll be driving a little further to see friends, so I expect it’ll be around the same. Oh, and I pay $8 a month for my web space.

After what I have to pay for, there tends to be a few things I enjoy spending money on. Primarily going out to eat; a budget I set and regularly go over. I could easily spend $200 a month eating out — but I’ve been keeping it at about $75 a month as of late. Then I budget myself another $75 for random fun, like going to the movies or seeing a concert.

So all in all, my monthly budget is low. Right now I can get by on under $1,000 a month — however, I usually end up spending around $1,200 to $1,300. It seems each month I have a $100-200 unexpected expense (car trouble, sick pet, doctor’s appointment), so I usually factor that in when I do my monthly planning.

That being said, I will have some new expenses upon moving out. Of course, first and foremost will be rent. I’m prepared to pay up to $700. Then utilities are an add on, however, the house we’re looking at has everything but electricity included — so that’s a huge bonus. Electricity and internet will probably cost me around $100 a month (since it’s split between house mates).

So all in all, I can expect my monthly expenses to look something like this:

If I keep up my current trend of spending an additional $400-500 on top of this, I’ll be spending roughly $1,900 a month. Since I get paid around $2,400 a month, I’ll still be able to save about $500, which I’ve set as a goal saving mark for myself. However, I think I can cut back some of my spending and keep my monthly expenses around $1,700. The more I can save, the better, since I’ll have a lot of big expenses coming up soon (new car, laptop).

Lastly, I should apologize — this post is extremely boring, I know. It’s really just for myself, so I can ease my worries about moving out. I cling to the money I make, so it’s going to be tough to drop a bunch of it on a security deposit, furniture, etc. But it will be very exciting. I love change!

My Bread Making Adventure: Part II

That’s a picture of my newest loaf, cinnamon raisin, all bundled up and stored. It came out huge! It tastes OK — a little bland. I can’t tell if it’s bland because I’m sick, or because I’m used to the extra sugary store brands. The recipe called for a tiny bit of brown sugar and honey in lieu of regular sugar, so I’m guessing next time I should be a bit more generous with those ingredients.

Mint + Chocolate = Bliss

Mint Choco-chip-o-holic!! by Justina

Check out Justina’s blog, La Boheme Magique! She’s an extremely talented artist, musician, photographer… well hell, I’m not sure what she can’t do. :)

Thanks for the shout-out, and enjoy all the mint-chocolate-chip goodies!

My Bread Making Adventure: Part I

This past weekend, my Mom was nice enough to grab a bread maker for me at the local thrift store. Only $10! I was really excited to make my first loaf, so I cleaned the machine and downloaded the manual off the web.

My New Bread Machine

Isn’t she pretty? It bakes decent sized loaves, and I can set it 12 hours in advance. On Monday night, I threw in the ingredients for basic white bread and set it to be ready at 9 am.

Rising

I woke up around 8:30, to the smell of warm bread. This happy little bubble was growing!

All Done!

Just a little while later — all done! I have to admit, I was skeptical about this little machine. Could the tiny mixing flipper inside really do all the work?

My First Loaf

Voila! It looks like bread… on the outside.

Yummy

Hmm, the inside looks good, too!

Perfectly Warm Breakfast

The final verdict: delicious! It’s very dense and filling, I’m guessing because it isn’t packed with fillers and preservatives. It’s nice to know exactly what you’re eating for a change.

The first loaf will be finished today, and I have to say, it was a success. It was buttered for breakfast, slapped on turkey and cheese for lunch, and toasted with rosemary and olive oil for dinner.

My next adventure will be a garlic rosemary loaf. Wish me luck!

Viva la Vida!

I was surprised to see Frida Kahlo, one of my favorite artists, as a trending topic on Twitter today. I thought only Justin Bieber and the World Cup would be trend-worthy. Regardless, I’m happy to see someone worthwhile up there.

I’m going to continue browsing her art today, in remembrance of her birthday. Viva la vida!

The Great Escape

I spent the weekend at my friend Eric’s beach house in Lavallete, NJ. It was perfect. We woke up early, ate delicious home-cooked breakfasts, and spent the afternoons on the beach lounging and swimming.

We came in for sandwiches and some AC, then hit the beach again in the late afternoon for more sun. The evenings were full of amazing BBQ food, ice cream, fireworks, beer, raccoons (a separate post for these guys coming soon), and friends.

I could not have asked for a better Fourth of July. I didn’t bring my camera, and I abandoned my cell phone for most of the trip. I forgot all hair and makeup products, so it truly was a complete break from the day-to-day. I wanted to disconnect, and it was a great escape.

Measurements

Tonight I measured Dexter for his new x-back harness, which I ordered from Alpine Outfitters. I was going to wait until theTails of the Tundra hike to pick one up, but I figured I could always have an extra — especially since I plan on adding a puppy in the winter.

I’m really eager to start training Dexter for real bikejoring. Instead of running alongside my bike, I want him to get used to pulling. I need to pick up some tow lines and rig up some kind of object he can practice pulling — maybe some sort of wagon or an old tire.

My goal is to have him comfortable with commands and pulling by the winter. Then by next winter, I’ll hopefully have a second dog ready to train. That’s when getting a sled or scooter will happen, and I’ll transition completely into a dog nerd.
